11 Myths Black Women Need to Stop Believing

Introduction
Menopause is a natural part of every woman’s life — but for many Black women, it’s
wrapped in stigma, silence, and myths that make it even harder to navigate. As a women’s
health expert, I see first-hand how misunderstanding and cultural taboos can delay care and
increase health risks.
This article breaks down 11 common myths about menopause and perimenopause,
especially relevant for Black women — so you can feel informed, confident, and supported.
Myth 1: “Menopause starts at age 50”
Busted! Many Black women experience menopause earlier than age 50 — sometimes up to
11 years earlier. Genetics, lifestyle, and existing health conditions all play a role. Early
awareness helps manage risks like heart disease, dementia, and osteoporosis.
Myth 2: “Menopause is just hot flushes”
Busted! Hot flushes are common, but menopause brings a whole spectrum of symptoms —
from sleep problems and mood swings to brain fog and weight changes.
Myth 3: “Symptoms are only physical”
Busted! Menopause affects your mental and emotional health too — anxiety, low mood, and
feeling ‘not yourself’ are real. Cultural pressure to ‘power through’ means Black women can
miss out on help they deserve.
Myth 4: “Menopause means the end of womanhood”
Busted! Menopause is not the end of your worth or femininity. It’s a transition — not a
disappearance of who you are. Let’s rewrite this narrative together.
Myth 5: “Menopause is a negative experience”
Busted! Many women feel relief, freedom, and new energy after menopause. It can be a new
chapter, not a crisis.
Myth 6: “I can’t be in menopause — I still have periods”
Busted! Perimenopause is the transition phase — you may still have periods while your
hormones shift. Irregular cycles, night sweats, and mood changes can all be signs you’re
entering menopause.
Myth 7: “Pregnancy isn’t possible in perimenopause”
Busted! You can still get pregnant in perimenopause — contraception is still important
unless you’re sure you’ve stopped ovulating.
Myth 8: “Menopause means the end of intimacy”
Busted! Many women experience changes in libido, but menopause doesn’t mean you must
give up intimacy. Support, treatment, and honest conversations can help.
Myth 9: “Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is harmful”
Busted! Modern HRT can be safe and life-changing for many women. Fears about HRT often
come from outdated research — today’s options are evidence-based and carefully managed.
Myth 10: “It’s natural, so I should just get on with it”
Busted! Yes, menopause is natural — but that doesn’t mean you must suffer alone. Support,
treatment, and advice can make a huge difference.
Myth 11: “We don’t talk about menopause”
Busted! In many communities, menopause is still a taboo. But open conversations help us
break stigma and get the right care.
